Health & PE Friday Blog (October Edition)

IN THE COMMENTS BELOW, LET ME KNOW A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE AND A FRUSTRATION.

Please welcome Brianna Doherty to the #CVHPE family. She fills the opening that we had over the summer at Mountain View. We will all get to meet her at the next department meeting. WELCOME BRIANNA!!!

I hope all is going as well as it can be in these strange times that we are working through. Some may be thinking about when budgets are going to be due and some of the other annual tasks. I have not heard anything about budgets yet, but imagine when I do, it will be a fast turn around. On Monday, I plan to set up the 21-22 budget sheets for you. The budget will not be increased I am sure. We also don’t have any idea if we will be teaching under this schedule next year. My advice for now is use the sheet as a brainstorm: What do I need to teach and what do students need to learn under the Tier 2 schedule next year? What do I need to teach next year and what do students need to learn if we are fully open? I know that CVVA is going to continue no matter what the schedule.

Frustration to a cool learning experience

A few weeks back, I was growing frustrated at planning zoom lessons for my Net/Racket classes. I had been giving discussion questions and asking them to complete tasks in breakout rooms. Kids were giving half efforts and sitting in the breakout rooms on mute when they were “finished.” In a fit of mild anger, I scrapped my next plan with a video and made the kids do all the work. I told them to find videos of mistakes that were made with the tennis strokes, list the mistakes, and create (find) a drill that can be used to work on fixing that mistake.

Engagement went up and kids used a life skill – research and writing through tennis class. The assignment is also manageable enough that kids who were absent, can do it on their own. Giving it to the kids on zoom made the zoom more interesting for the kids (and me too).
